Sometimes you start listening to one band or you have been listening to one band, and then you find out that they’re going to playing a show with this other band. And then you notice that other bands have also been talking about how good that one band is. Well, that one band happens to be JANK, a self-dubbed “weed pop” trio with killer sound, great lyrics, and amazing album art.
Released on Bandcamp on July 27, JANK’s newest EP, Versace Summer, is pretty much exactly what the title sounds like, literally and maybe a little ironically. I’m probably more than a bit in love with Matt Diamond’s vocals, which fit the instrumentals perfectly, with a sound that is very “rebel against the establishment.” And maybe it is what one might consider “stoner music,” but it’s very good stoner music–catchy and fun and great for parties. Versace Summer is currently available on Bandcamp for pay-what-you-want and on Spotify.
Not to be overshadowed by its successor, Awkward Pop Songs (2016) is a gem all on its own, following the theme of clever and laughable song titles, including my favorite, “Ouran Highschool Toast Club” (a play on the popular anime and manga, Ouran High School Host Club). Let me also say that “The Hat Store” is the most ridiculous song I’ve ever heard, and I mean that in the best way possible.
There’s not a lot that can be said about JANK that isn’t better explained by listening to their music, which is well-crafted and extremely enjoyable to listen to. (In fact, Versace Summer is currently playing in the background as I try to convince you to listen to them.) Another way to get a good grasp of a band such as JANK is to watch them live, and if you live in New York City, you’re in luck. JANK will be playing in the Marlin Room of Webster Hall on December 18 for Champagne Jam.
So give the boys in JANK a listen and let us know what you think!
