Julien Baker is one of the little gems I discovered within the last couple of months, thanks to a steady stream of artist recommendations on my Twitter feed. She has an amazing voice and great songwriting talent. So it’s no great surprise that Brand New frontman Jesse Lacey decided to cover one of her songs during the band’s tour with The Front Bottoms and Modern Baseball.
The video above was taken yesterday, November 3, on the El Paso, Texas stop of the tour. You can’t really see anything but you can definitely hear it. The song that Lacey covered is called “Sprained Ankle,” which is also the name of Baker’s debut album. Differences in voice due to gender aside, Lacey’s rendition creates a unique mood that stands on its own. Of course, Baker’s original version is beautiful, almost hauntingly so in its sound and instrumental balance and blend; and you can watch the it below to compare for yourself.
Let us know what you think, and don’t miss out on the remaining dates of Brand New’s tour!
